Huge field revs into Bunbury for GT Fabrication Targa Bunbury Sprint

The GT Fabrication Targa Bunbury Sprint will rev into the south west of Western Australia this weekend, 22-23 June, giving some old-timers the ride of their life as well as a chance for motoring enthusiasts to get up close and admire fine cars.

Over 115 cars from classic Mini, Datsun and Ford Escorts to powerful V8s, turbo-charged rally cars and exotic cars will compete in the fastest growing segment of motorsport in Australia.

Event Director Ross Tapper said that the short-fast format is popular with competitors and those looking to get a start in motorsport.

“There’s a strong appetite for the Rallysprint events and for Targa events in the south west with more competitors each year,” Tapper said.

“Rallysprint is fast, fun and great for those new to rallying as well as those more experienced who want to keep their skills honed. Rallysprint requires team work between driver and co-driver and the ability to drive with obstacles in close vicinity of the road, neither of which can be practised on a race track.”

Saturday morning is “Grab a Granny or Grandad”, a community event where competitors will take residents of the Ocean Star Village on a cruise, or more of a thrill, in their rally cars.

Saturday evening 5.30pm to 8.30pm, the rally cars will be on display at the free Shannons Show ‘n’ Shine on Victoria Street.

Sunday is race day where competitors will race the clock along closed roads in 20-second intervals; the winner is the fastest car. The course is approximately four kilometres long and will be run four times anticlockwise and four times clockwise.

“The Bunbury city centre will be alive with the colour and noise of tarmac rallying as competitors take to the street on Sunday morning,” the Event Director said.

“The street circuit will be exciting for competitors, spectators and local businesses as Mustangs, Chevrolets and Porches as well as some nostalgic classic cars give it their all to finish on the podium.”

The action commences Sunday morning in the Halifax light industrial area from 9.00am. The course starts on Monkhouse Street and runs along Halifax Drive, Maxted Street, Gibbons Road, Marchant Street, Hensen Street, Shanahan Road, Mason Street, Juniper Way, Clifford Street, Sherlock Way, McCombe Road, Jordan Way and finishing on Clifford Street.
